Top 10 Most Expensive Countries for Tourists to Visit

I saw this interesting graphic and I was shocked to not see a few countries in the list (New Zealand, Japan).

The World Economic Forum’s Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2015, which assesses 141 economies on a range of factors linked to their tourism industries.

In the report, price competitiveness is calculated based on ticket taxes and airport charges, hotel price index, purchasing power parity and fuel prices.

Switzerland, is ranked the #1 expensive place to visit.

What I want to know is where are the cheapest country to visit?

I am traveling over the next six weeks to Denmark, Sweden, Norway, London-UK, France and Switzerland on a low budget. I expect to spend less than $30 per day, excluding hotels, which are mostly paid with points.

A couple weeks ago I wrote about the backpacker index. PriceofTravel.com came up frequently in my searches.

Three cheap meals, two beers, one round trip public transportation ticket, one paid attraction and a hostel room night is the daily cost-of-travel budeget calculation.

I upgrade to a hotel room, but otherwise I travel mostly on this kind of backpacker budget.

Least expensive countries are Nepal and Vietnam based on this index.

      Hi Ric,

Sounds like an awesome trip! I think it always depends what your tastes are like and hotel points really cushion the budget blow.

We recently spent 11 nights in New YOrk City (Mid-town) and didn’t pay for any nights and it certainly helped us spend more on food and activities!

      Thanks for the comment.

Have you been to New Zealand or Japan? Even two years ago they were pretty moderately priced destinations and comparable to a cheap USA city. Now with the higher dollar they’re an even better value.
