Erica Ho at Map Happy found that many Google apps, as well as a few others, often work as long as you’re connected to the wi-fi network on the plane.

Personally, when I was on a cruise I was able to visit other websites even though I never paid for the WI-FI. I need to test this for our future Air Canada flights using Go-Go.
