The 85,000 points gives you incredible flexibility with redemptions available at a Category 8 hotel or you can do a couple of nights at a Category 5 hotel or five nights at a Category 3 hotel.
The fact that you receive an annual Free Night Award worth 35,000 Bonvoy points starting in your second year with the card makes this is a card that I will always keep (easy to find a hotel where the value is more than the annual fee). Additionally, this is the best card to use for the extra Bonvoy points when redeeming at Marriott hotels.
Generally speaking, you should look for redemption opportunities that give your points a value of at least $0.01 (that is what I would value a Bonvoy point at). If you’re looking to book a free night at a hotel that costs 20,000 points, and the real-world cost of that booking would be $200, that’s a good redemption value at 1 cent per point.
If a hotel requires 35,000 Bonvoy points for a free night but has a cost of $180, I would recommend paying cash for the night since your redemption value would just over half a cent per point.
