• Pros and Cons of Alaska Airlines for Canadians

This is a great frequent flyer program for Canadians living in Alberta and British Columbia. This airline flies from Victoria, Vancouver, Kelowna, Calgary, and Edmonton in Canada to cities in Alaska, Hawaii, the lower 48 states, and Mexico.

Alaska Airlines® does not belong to any global airline alliance like the Star AllianceTM, but you do have the opportunity to earn and redeem miles across airlines from different alliances. This program makes sense for flyers that do not fly frequently enough in the United States with either Delta or American to achieve any type of Elite status with those carriers. You can credit the miles that you would earn flying those airlines to your Alaska Airlines® mileage account, making this a flexible program.

Members of this program earn one mile per mile flown on Alaska Airlines® and their partners. You earn a minimum of 500 miles for short hops, i.e. Victoria, British Columbia to Seattle, Washington. First class fares earn 50 percent additional bonus miles, and Full Flex fares earn an additional 25 percent. Earning varies with partner airlines, and most offer actual flight miles with fewer miles for discounted coach fares and more miles for higher fare classes.

Alaska Airlines® has many bonus mile offers on its website. They reward travel booked through Alaska Airlines® Vacations and premium fares booked (First, Business and Premium economy class tickets) with their airline partners.

They also have one of the top travel reward credit cards available for Canadians, the Alaska Airlines® Platinum MasterCard Credit Card.

This card features:

• 25,000 Bonus Miles upon approval.
• An annual coach Companion Fare from $110 (USD) ($99 base fare plus taxes and fees, from $11 depending on your Alaska Airlines® flight itinerary).
• One mile for every $1 spent on qualifying net retail purchases.
• Three miles for every dollar in qualifying net retail purchases of Alaska Airlines® flights and vacation packages.

I have this credit card, and I really enjoy having the companion fare certificate. I use this for long-haul flights in North America to Florida or Hawaii, where the fares can be high flying from British Columbia.

You have the option of using one-way or round-trip awards at three levels of redemption: Super Saver, Choice, and Full Flex for flights with Alaska Airlines. You can also redeem miles with fifteen other carriers, including American Airlines, British Airways, Delta, Emirates, and KLM.

If you travel enough with Alaska Airlines® and their select airline partners, you can qualify for elite status. As an MVP, MVP Gold, or Gold 75K member, you can enjoy great benefits, special treatment, and even bonus miles on every flight.

I have redeemed my Alaska Airlines® miles for flights on the floatplane from Victoria to Seattle’s Lake Union with former partner Kenmore Air, flights to Miami, San Diego, Los Angeles, and for a trip to London, England with partner American Airlines.

Positives:

• Alaska allows one stopover of more than 24 hours or one open jaw on international awards.
• As long as you keep your account active, by earning or spending at least one mile every 24 months, your miles will never expire.
• Option of using Money & Miles for a discount off of a purchased ticket.
• Can earn Elite status by flying with other partner airlines.

Negatives:

• Not too many retail partners in the program for Canadians, so you need to get an affiliated credit card or fly frequently to earn mileage.
• Not a member of any major airline alliance.
• Alaska Airlines Seattle Lounge Review – Disappointing

I am a big fan of airport lounges. You get to relax and enjoy the fast WIFI and snacks before your next flights.

On our trip back from Maui we had a stop in Seattle before flying to Victoria with Horizon Airlines for almost two hours.

SEA (Sea-tac) is a wonderful airport but we wanted a chance to relax after our long flight from Maui with the connection in Sacramento!

[styled_box title=”Disclosure Statement” color=”blue”]My wife and I each paid $45 for a day pass to the Alaska Airlines lounge in Seattle.[/styled_box]

After we paid our $45 daily fee for the use of the lounge it was about 8:35 pm and we were hoping to enjoy a nice soup or some snacks.

My wife and I were both disappointed in the lack of snacks and no soup available (was already eaten).

For pop or soda drinkers, they have access to mainly Coke products and for coffee drinkers a nice selection of Starbucks drinks.

The lounge is being set to be renovated as the carpet and some of the furniture needs to be replaced (too much wear and tear).

They have the standard world clocks and have a handy flight schedule to track changes.

The Alaska Airlines Seattle lounge has a wonderful workspace to do work and is a quiet zone.

My overall impression is disappointing. The lounge had some nice features but the lack of snacks was a major problem for me.

Only one of the customer service agents went to get a yogurt for our daughter (couldn’t really give her croutons and nacho chips). The other agents I spoke with after alerting them about the lack of snacks could not seem bothered.

I expect a lot from a lounge when I am paying $45 for a day pass at that time of the evening. I understand the lack of food but contingency plans need to be in place to have extra sandwiches or wraps (not that hard to make).

I have Alaska MVP status at the moment and I have flown 64,699 actual miles as of today so I can reasonably expect a certain level of quality.

The wines (from Washington State and Oregon) were very nice and they had other spirits and beer available from a bartender.

After going to this lounge I am not sure I would spend the money to go to another Alaska Airlines lounge – I have heard they have a new one in LAX. The American Airlines lounges I have been to have had excellent snacks and better service.

Have you ever been to this lounge and what were your thoughts?

• First Class Trip Report Seattle to Maui – Alaska Airlines

We are so fortunate to have Alaska MVP status.

With the free Atlantic Silver status we acquired, my wife and I status matched to Alaska MVP status. This was perfect timing as we  booked a flight from Victoria, BC (YYJ) to Kahalui, Maui (OGG).

Here are some of the applicable benefits with being an MVP:

• Unlimited Complimentary Upgrades anytime on Y, S, or B fares or 48 hours prior to departure on other fares.
• Priority Boarding on Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, and Delta Air Lines.
• Checked Baggage Fee Waiver for first two bags on Alaska Airlines and American Airlines, and for the first checked bag on Delta Air Lines for MVP® member and companions traveling in the same reservation. Companion waiver does not apply to group bookings.
• 50% Bonus Flight Miles on Alaska Airlines, AeroMexico, Air France, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Emirates, KLM, or LAN.

We saved a bundle and earned mega points for our trip!

So luckily the flight from Seattle to Maui had availability in first class and 48 hours prior to the flight we were automatically upgraded.
I still can’t believe our daughter is not even two years old and has already flown first class!
As soon as were seated in row 4 we had a chance to enjoy the complimentary passion fruit mimosas. For our daughter, the flight attendant provided a drink with 1/2 passion fruit and 1/2 water as per our request (she asked what we could get her).

In first-class you have access to a DigEplayer for free, this is usually $10 in economy class. This has a few recent movies, tv shows and music. I liked the large selection of older movies (which I prefer over recent hits). This was a nice touch.

Our daughter was relatively well behaved during the flight. They did not have any pillows and we should have remembered to bring a large one for her to sleep on (it is easier and more comfortable).

The best part was the wine service and dessert (outstanding Pinot Blanc and Bananas Foster).

The entree and appetizer were kind of ordinary (I noticed others didn’t touch the appetizer).

Near the end of the flight we were each served a complimentary mai tai. I don’t know who was the bartender but it was the best and strongest mai tai I ever drank.

It made the long journey to Maui more enjoyable!
