  • Best Starwood Resorts to redeem Starwood Points in BC

I am a big Starwood fan (especially with stays like this and this).

    Starwood Resorts Whistler
    Starwood Resorts Whistler

Here are some of my favourites:

    1. The Westin Grand Vancouver

This hotel is located in the heart of Vancouver and features easy access to all downtown attractions. This hotel has a great location at the crossroads of trendy Yaletown and Robson streets puts our guests close to the city’s best dining, shopping, and entertainment.

This is a Category 4 property so a 1 night stay costs 10,000 Starpoints.

This hotel costs in peak season over $300 a night.

    2. The Westin Bayshore, Vancouver

This is another hotel in Vancouver that has a great location and is a Category 4 property.

This hotel costs in peak season over $250 a night.

    3.  The Westin Whistler Resort & Spa

This hotel is just steps from both mountain gondolas and in the center of the excitement of the pedestrian friendly Whistler Village.  The hotel has been twice-named by Condé Nast as the #1 ski resort hotel in North America

This is an SPG category 5 property and is priced at a whopping 16,000 SPG points per night.

I recommend using your SPG points and booking at the Westin Whistler as nights can cost up to $999 (Rack Rate) during the peak ski season (over New Years).  You are basically booking a reward that can cost $5,000 during peak season (not that you would ever pay that amount).

I love my Starwood points as they do not have Blackout dates to redeem them – making them the most flexible rewards out there.

Did you know that if you book four nights with any reward that you can receive a free Fifth night!

The free night offered with any Fifth Night Free Award applies only to the fifth consecutive night within the same stay for which that award was ordered.

One Starwood trick that I have is that my spouse and I each have the credit card and earn SPG points. When we need to make a redemption we simply combine our points for free (free for SPG members in the same house) to get a bigger reward.

I recommend applying for the Starwood Preferred Guest American Express Card.

With the link below you will receive 21,000 Starwood points upon successful completion of the minimum spending ($1,000 the first three months).

  • WestJet introduces Plus to Canada

WestJet today announced the market launch of Plus, an important part of the airline’s fare bundle roll-out, offering additional flexibility, comfort and convenience to guests looking for more options.

    westjet-logo
    Westjet Plus

    Plus includes:

    • complimentary flight change and cancel options
    • extra baggage allowance (two free checked bags)
    • extra legroom (36-inch seat pitch)
    • a complimentary food item and alcoholic beverages from our inflight menu
    • advance boarding and overhead bin space
    • priority security screening at available airports

“Plus is the answer for a growing market of travellers who have asked for more choice and flexibility at lower fares than exist today,” said Bob Cummings, WestJet Executive Vice-President, Sales, Marketing and Guest Experience. “The introduction of Plus allows us to offer guests the same guest experience they have always enjoyed while providing additional features to meet their needs. What WestJet includes in Plus is offered at a price much lower than what competitors have made available to date and I am proud that WestJet continues to drive value for the travelling public. Plus is an excellent choice for business travellers and guests who require greater flexibility, more amenities and less planning around their travel dates.”

Plus completes the fare bundle launch that began earlier this year with the fleet reconfiguration, creating additional legroom in the first three rows of seating in all of WestJet’s 103 Boeing Next Generation 737 aircraft. Guests can now choose Econo, Flex, or Plus fares at time of booking at westjet.com, via our Sales Super Centre at 1-888-WESTJET (937-8538), or through their preferred travel agent based on individual itinerary and travel requirements. By offering three fare levels, WestJet continues to provide Canadians with affordable travel options along with its signature fun, friendly and caring service.

“Plus is the latest investment WestJet has made for the business traveller,” concluded Bob Cummings. “Our ever-improving schedule enhanced through our airline partnerships and the launch of WestJet Encore provides the connectivity our business guests need. WestJet Rewards is a simple and transparent rewards program backed by one of the most trusted brands in Canada.”

  • How to get free Las Vegas Rooms, Buffets, Drinks, Shows – myVEGAS Facebook Game

I used to be a gamer! I had a PS3, Xbox and so many games but then I turned 24 and it wasn’t as much fun anymore.

I have come across this interesting and fun Facebook game myVEGAS.

Basically a simple Facebook game where you collect chips, bet with them, and earn loyalty points for amazing free rewards like hotel rooms, dinners, and show tickets at the hottest spots in Las Vegas.

    My Vegas Facebook game rewards.
    My Vegas Facebook game rewards.

Some of the more popular rewards are Bellagio Buffet, all the Cirque shows, and lots and lots of room offers. You don’t have to pay resort fees if you get comped by them.

Loyalty Points are easy to earn and even easier to redeem! By playing myVEGAS more frequently, playing longer, buying chips, and spreading the word about the game, you’ll accumulate myVEGAS Loyalty Points that you can redeem.

I have over 100,000 loyalty points now which wasn’t hard to get.

I can use my loyalty points on rewards like Adventuredome passes to a free buffet at the Excalibur to a ticket to Ka (Cirque show).

I am still not sure when we can get down to Vegas this year but it may be in 2014.

  • Scotiabank Gold American Express Card Review

This is a credit card by ScotiaBank and American Express. I own two different AMEX cards (SPG and their rewards card) but I wanted to  review their Scotiabank Gold American Express card.

    Scotiabank Gold American Express Card
    Scotiabank Gold American Express Card

    Benefits:

    • Earn 15,000 Bonus Points, a $150 travel value
    • Flexible point redemption; no expiry or blackouts
    • Earn 4x Scotia Rewards points for every $1 you spend at eligible gas stations, grocery stores, on dining and entertainment.
    • Receive up to 20% off the lowest published offer at over 18,000 hotels worldwide, with special rates and/or complimentary amenities.

    • Receive up to 20% off the Best Available Rates and a complimentary room upgrade (if available) at some of the world’s most incredible properties. Enjoy a free amenity, complimentary breakfast and late checkout privileges (if available).
    • Receive a special yearly Priority Pass Membership price for only $65 USD (a 35% discount off the regular price) and access each lounge visit for just $27 USD.
    • As the primary Cardmember, you, your spouse and accompanying dependent children are each automatically covered for up to $1 million in emergency medical coverage if sudden and unexpected illness or accidental injury should occur while travelling outside your province or territory of residence in Canada.
    • When you purchase common carrier tickets with your Scotiabank Gold American Express Card, you are eligible for coverage against the loss or the delay of your checked luggage.
    • You may be reimbursed for eligible reasonable living expenses incurred during the period of a delayed flight or missed connection which lasts four hours or more to a limit $500 per trip for all insured travellers. Simply charge the full cost of your tickets to your Scotiabank Gold American Express Card.

    My feedback:

This card has an Annual Fee of $99 for the Primary Card Holder and an Additional Card Holder Annual Fee of $29. The travel benefits are really standard with most high-end American Express Cards. I like the 4x Scotia Rewards points for every $1 you spend at eligible gas stations, grocery stores, on dining and entertainment but one thing to remember is that it only applies to merchants that may qualify for accelerated Scotia Rewards points.

The card is easy to figure out – 1 point = 1 penny towards travel. I look at this as a 1 % return or cash back equivalent (unless you can find a merchant for four times the points).

You only need a travel purchase to redeem those points that you accumulate.

The minimum redemption is 5,000 points (not disclosed on their page so be aware of that fact)!

I prefer the American Express Gold Rewards Card as I can transfer to other programs like Aeroplan and Avios and have the option to use for any travel.

This card also has no annual fee for the first year and gives you 20,000 Membership rewards points. This is worth $200 in travel benefits.

My recommendation is that if you are looking for an American Express travel card to look at the American Express Gold Rewards Card.
