• First Class Trip Report Seattle to Maui – Alaska Airlines

We are so fortunate to have Alaska MVP status.

With the free Atlantic Silver status we acquired, my wife and I status matched to Alaska MVP status. This was perfect timing as we  booked a flight from Victoria, BC (YYJ) to Kahalui, Maui (OGG).

My daughter and I fly first class on Alaska Airlines

Here are some of the applicable benefits with being an MVP:

• Unlimited Complimentary Upgrades anytime on Y, S, or B fares or 48 hours prior to departure on other fares.
• Priority Boarding on Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, and Delta Air Lines.
• Checked Baggage Fee Waiver for first two bags on Alaska Airlines and American Airlines, and for the first checked bag on Delta Air Lines for MVP® member and companions traveling in the same reservation. Companion waiver does not apply to group bookings.
• 50% Bonus Flight Miles on Alaska Airlines, AeroMexico, Air France, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Emirates, KLM, or LAN.

We saved a bundle and earned mega points for our trip!

So luckily the flight from Seattle to Maui had availability in first class and 48 hours prior to the flight we were automatically upgraded.
I still can’t believe our daughter is not even two years old and has already flown first class!
As soon as were seated in row 4 we had a chance to enjoy the complimentary passion fruit mimosas. For our daughter, the flight attendant provided a drink with 1/2 passion fruit and 1/2 water as per our request (she asked what we could get her).

In first-class you have access to a DigEplayer for free, this is usually $10 in economy class. This has a few recent movies, tv shows and music. I liked the large selection of older movies (which I prefer over recent hits). This was a nice touch.

Our daughter was relatively well behaved during the flight. They did not have any pillows and we should have remembered to bring a large one for her to sleep on (it is easier and more comfortable).

Here is a photo of the menu:

The best part was the wine service and dessert (outstanding Pinot Blanc and Bananas Foster).

The entree and appetizer were kind of ordinary (I noticed others didn’t touch the appetizer).

Near the end of the flight we were each served a complimentary mai tai. I don’t know who was the bartender but it was the best and strongest mai tai I ever drank.

It made the long journey to Maui more enjoyable!

• Free Top Tier Status with Accor Hotels (For Status Match)

One of my favourite travel hacks is status matching.

logo-leclub-accor

Basically, if you have status in one program you request the equivalent status in another program. This gives you extra perks for free!

Once you have this free platinum status you can request status in Best Western, Club Carlson and Priority Club loyalty programs.

Here’s a current offer for instant Platinum status (your mileage may vary).

The offer is in Polish, but fortunately Google Chrome has built-in translation.

You must open a new account, it cannot be applied to existing accounts. And when you do so you must use an email address that’s not currently on file with them.

Even if you don’t frequently stay at Sofitel, Novotel, Pullman, Mercure, and other related properties frequently, you never know when you might find yourself in one and having top tier status can’t hurt.

Platinum status comes with double points at Sofitel, Pullman and MGallery hotels a complimentary drink and welcome gift, and subject to availability and on request 4pm late checkout and an upgrade.

• Should I take this Starwood Vacations offer?

We are currently staying at the The Westin Ka’anapali Ocean Resort Villas, an incredible beachside resort on Maui (we love it by the way).

maui1

We took part in a promotional offer sent to my wife (an SPG credit card holder) for $798 that included:

• 6 days’ and 5 nights’ accommodations at The Westin Ka’anapali Ocean Resort Villas
• $75 resort certificate that can be used toward dining, shopping or spa services within the resort
• $185 AVIS Rental Car Certificate

This has been a great value, the hotel room we are staying in (island studio) does not have a view of the ocean but I do not believe in paying extra for views (if I get this on upgrade it is OK). The room is big enough for my wife, daughter and I and has adequate cooking facilities.

We took an optional 90-minute 120-minute presentation (for an extra 7,500 Starpoints) that showed the benefits of Starwood ownership – sharing the other resorts and villas they have and the benefits of villa ownership.

After we declined we were offered another package:

7 nights and 8 days at the The Westin Ka’anapali Ocean Resort Villas and 50,000 Starpoints for $400 Deposit and 12 payments interest free of $199.

The catch is that we need to use the package within 2 years and we can’t book the last 10 days of the year.

The cost is $2788!

Should I pull the trigger?

• Porter Airline – Baggage delivery guarantee – Pros and Cons

Porter Airlines is introducing a checked baggage delivery guarantee. All checked bags will reach the baggage claim within 30 minutes of aircraft arriving at the gate of any airport, or a $25 voucher valid for future Porter travel within six months will be provided.

porter-airlines

In the event of a delay beyond 30 minutes, a passenger simply needs to file a report with an on-site Porter agent at the baggage claim within one hour of flight arrival to be credited with an electronic voucher on their file. One voucher is issued per qualified passenger for one or more checked bag. The offer does not apply to oversize or special handling items, such as golf clubs, skis or assistive devices.

All changes take effect for travel beginning August 1, 2013, for flights booked as of today. Pre-existing rules apply for flights booked before today or for travel occurring before Aug. 1.

Pros:

• If bag does not reach the baggage claim within 30 minutes of aircraft arriving at the gate of any airport a $25 voucher valid for future Porter travel within six months will be provided.
• Checked bag weight allowances are increasing to 23 kg (50 lb.) and 158 linear centimetres (length + width + height) per bag. Previously, the weight allowance was a combined total of 23 kg (50 lb.) for all checked bags.

Cons:

• Something to watch out for if flying to the US on Porter. (additional cost to budget when comparing airlines)
I don’t like the name, updated fees, from the press release – isn’t this just a new charge?
• Guide to Uber for Canadians

Have you ever used Uber?

screen1

It is basically an on-demand car service. You install an app on your smartphone or use your browser and request a car pickup. You then request where you want to go and your bill is sent to you (no need to worry about the gratuity or tip on the spot.

New members who are referred by an existing member like myself are now starting off with $20 towards their first trip (the referring member also gets $20). This is my referral link.

The only Canadian city this is available in is Toronto at the moment but you will see dozens of US cities so this is a good app to have and the $20 credit to start off with is a nice touch!

Use my referral link to enjoy $20 off your first ride.

How does Uber work?

1. Set your location with the iPhone/Android app: fix the pin or search for an address.
2. Text your address to 827222 (USA & Canada only)
3. Confirm your pickup request
4. Uber will send you an ETA (usually within 5-10 minutes)
5. When your car is arriving Uber will inform you again.
6. Hop in the car and tell the driver your destination.
• $444 – Alaska 7-Night Cruise from Vancouver w/$100 Credit

I found this great cruise deal, courtesy of TravelZoo. It seems to pay to wait to cruise this year. I always recommend not booking too early in advance (this is a great price for peak season and inside cabin).
Alaska cruises in peak summer season, including some last-minute departures, have been slashed to as low as $444 per person, including tax for sailings in July and August. Explore the glaciers, wildlife and expansive views during sailings that include all main meals and onboard entertainment. Guests will receive a $100 onboard credit per stateroom.
Inside cabins aboard the Norwegian Sun are available for (per person):

• $444 incl. tax … depart July 15 from Vancouver
• $594 incl. tax … depart July 29 from Vancouver

Whether sailing from Vancouver, the one-way cruises travel along the Inside Passage, stopping at Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, Glacier Bay and Hubbard Glacier. The order of the stops depends on the departure city. Other cabin types are available; click on the links above for more details.

The Norwegian Sun is a midsize ship that features among its amenities nine restaurants, live shows, a casino and kids club.

Book by July 10.

• Review of Aeroplan June 2013 Program Changes

Aeroplan made some major changes this morning (all for the better in my opinion).

aeroplan

Redeem For One-Way Trips At 50% Of The Miles Needed For Roundtrip Flight Rewards.

Today, one-way ClassicFlight Rewards require 67% of the miles needed for a roundtrip flight reward. As of January 1, 2014, a one-way trip will require exactly half the amount of miles you need to redeem for a roundtrip ClassicFlight Reward.

Cancellation of the seven-year mileage redemption policy

Aeroplan announced the cancellation of their Seven-year mileage redemption policy. Under this policy, miles unredeemed seven years following their accumulation date would have been removed from your account. Now miles will not begin expiring on January 1, 2014, as originally announced. Your miles will not expire as long as you stay active in Aeroplan. Now, you can keep accumulating miles knowing that they will be there when you need them.

The miles in your account will not expire as long as you have one accumulation or redemption activity every 12 months.

New market fare flight rewards

As of January 1, 2014, their ClassicPlus Flight Rewards will be replaced by Market Fare Flight Rewards, which will require up to 20% fewer miles than current ClassicPlus Flight Rewards. Distinction members will enjoy up to an additional 35% off. Market Fare Flight Rewards offer you greater availability on flights operated by Air Canada and under the Air Canada Express banner at variable mileage levels, which are derived from market fares at the time of booking and the conversion of these fares into mileage levels. Mileage levels are influenced by factors that fluctuate including destination, time of booking, time of travel, demand, and conversion of fares into miles.

As of January 1, 2014, enjoy limited-time surprise deals on certain flights, offering you even lower mileage levels than ClassicFlight Rewards.

Award Chart Update (more mileage).
