  • Transferring Starwood points to Aeroplan miles

    I have always wondered how long it takes to transfer Starwood Points to Aeroplan Miles.

    With Aeroplan, you can transfer up to 79,999 of your Starpoints® into Aeroplan miles at a 1-to-1 ratio. And for every 20,000 Starpoints transferred within the same transaction, you’ll earn 5,000 bonus Starpoints which will be automatically added to your transfer up to a maximum of 94,999 miles per eligible transfer.

    There is no minimum point transfer requirement for Platinum members. Gold members have a minimum point transfer of 1,500 Starpoints and Preferred members have a minimum point transfer of 2,500.

    Transfer maximums are based on a combination of member Starpoints and the Starwood Preferred Guest airline transfer transaction bonus. Only one airline transfer transaction per member per program per 24 hour period is allowed; multiple transfer transactions within the same 24 hour period will reject. Both the Starwood Preferred Guest and airline frequent flyer program accounts must have identical member names in order to complete this request; different names will cause the transfer to reject.

    I tried to transfer online but I was not successful so I transferred 20,0o0 online and asked a great SPG rep to transfer the rest!

  • New discount airline prepares for launch in Vancouver

    A new discount airline could soon be coming to Western Canada, potentially offering significantly cheaper air travel for Canadians.

    The company is called Jetlines. It’s being launched by a group of aviation veterans based in Vancouver.

    Already, the company says it has negotiated landing slots at airports in Western Canada.

    “We’re starting from Winnipeg and west and routes… that are not served or they’re underserved or they’re only served through a connection,” said David Solloway, who will serve as Jetlines’ chief commercial officer.

    Solloway said they are modelling the company after such deep-discount airlines as Ryanair in Europe and Allegiant Air in the U.S., offering fares 40 to 60 per cent cheaper than current averages.

  • WestJet now offering direct flights to Dublin

    WestJet Airlines says it is only dipping its toe in European waters with next summer’s launch of service to Dublin.

    Chief financial officer Vito Culmone told a transportation conference on Tuesday that there are potentially four or five other markets that could be serviced from St. John’s, NL, using three of the airline’s narrowbody Boeing 737-700 aircraft.

    He says the Calgary-based airline will use its first European foray to learn about the market and its different regulations, operational requirements, taxation and carbon emissions rules.

    The 2014 summer schedule is set, so any new destinations would have to wait, a company official later clarified.

    Starting June 15, 2014* WestJet will be offering our first transatlantic service from St. John’s, Newfoundland to Dublin, Ireland, with connecting service from several other Canadian destinations.
