  • 2015 Aeroplan Devaluation – Effective December 15, 2015

Well it was inevitable that Aeroplan would increase the Aeroplan miles required for some of the sweet spots of their chart.

    aeroplan-changes

    Major changes:

    1. Canada to Europe 1 Business Class has gone from 90,000 Aeroplan Miles to 110,000 miles.
    2. Business class awards within Asia 1 (increasing from 30,000 miles to 80,000 miles round-trip)
    3. Between Europe 1 and Asia 2 (increasing from 105,000 miles to 150,000 miles.)
    4. Previously there was a separate one-way award chart that only applied to travel departing Canada and the continental U.S. That’s now being scrapped and replaced with a general rule that any award can be booked one-way for 50% of the round-trip price.

I am not happy with the changes but it had to happen (the other major programs recently made changes).

Here is a link to a great summary by Reward Canada.

  • Complete list of Aeroplan carriers with small or no fuel surcharges

One of the main complaints I hear about redeeming miles in Canada is that many airlines charge enormous fuel surcharges that don’t make it worth it to redeem miles. Here is a list of carriers that do and do not collect fuel surcharge with Aeroplan.

Aeroplan fuel surcharges (YQ) collected on the following airlines:

    Air Canada (AC)
    Lufthansa (LH)
    All Nippon Airways (NH)
    Asiana (OZ)
    Thai (TG)
    Austrian Airlines (OS)
    LOT Polish Airlines (LO)
    TAP Portugal (TP)
    Adria Airways (JP)

Aeroplan fuel surcharges (YQ) NOT charged on these airlines:

    Aegean Airlines (A3)
    Air China (CA)
    Air India (AI)
    Air New Zealand (NZ)
    Avianca/TACA (AV)
    Brussels (SN)
    Copa (CM)
    Croatia (OU)
    Egypt Air (MS)
    Ethiopian (ET)
    Eva Air (BR)
    SAS (SK)
    Shenzhen (ZH)
    Singapore (SQ)
    South African Airways (SA)
    Swiss (LX)
    Turkish (TK)
    United (UA)

All fuel surcharge amounts are applied by Aeroplan on behalf of the ticketing carrier and are passed through directly to the ticketing carrier. Fuel surcharge amounts are determined by each airline and may change from time to time. Aeroplan has applied fuel surcharges for flight rewards on Air Canada since 2004. The fuel surcharge amounts to be applied by Aeroplan for flights on Star Alliance airlines will be the same as those applied by the individual airlines within their own frequent flyer programs.

Fuel surcharges applied to flight rewards on the following Star Alliance airlines became effective on January 25th, 2012: Adria Airways and TAP Portugal.

These are in addition to fuel surcharges applied to flight rewards on Lufthansa that became effective on November 9th, 2011 as well as: ANA, Asiana Airlines, Austrian Airlines, bmi, LOT Polish Airlines and THAI that came into effect on November 30th, 2011.

Members making voluntary changes after the applicable effective date to existing bookings with these airlines will also be subject to the fuel surcharges.

  • Aeroplan Miles Update – Accumulation changes for Air India

Air India, a Star Alliance member airline, is India’s national carrier. Headquartered in New Delhi, they offer passengers seamless travel across domestic and international routes. Air India serves over 50 domestic destinations and 31 international destinations in 19 countries across Australia, Asia, Europe and North America.

    air_india

You can earn Aeroplan Miles on most scheduled flights operated by Air India.

Earning Aeroplan Miles on flights will change on March 1, 2015.

    • Earn miles when you purchase an eligible booking class and travel on flights operated by Air India. Some exceptions may apply.
    • Aeroplan Miles earned on all eligible Air India flights are also Altitude Qualifying Miles and count towards Air Canada Altitude™ status. For more details, please consult altitude.aircanada.com.
    • Be sure to provide your Aeroplan number when you make a reservation.
    • Always keep your ticket and boarding pass until the miles have been credited to your account. If the miles for a recent flight have not been credited, you can request the missing miles up to 11 months from the flight date. Learn more about Requesting Mileage Credit
    • Please refer to the charts below to see how many miles you will earn.
    • For codeshare flights marketed by Air India but operated by another Star Alliance member airline, the operating airline determines how many miles you earn for your flight. Therefore, the booking class that appears on your ticket may differ from the booking class that the operating airline uses to determine flight miles earned. Refer to the Eligible Flights Tab of the operating carrier.
    • Mileage earned is based on actual miles flown, the percentage of booking class accumulation and the minimum mile rule.
    • Charter flights operated by Air India are not eligible.
    • Codeshare flights marketed by Air India and operated by non-Star Alliance airlines are not eligible.
