Air Canada’s loyalty program Aeroplan announced a new multi-year strategic partnership with the LCBO that will provide market leading value to Ontarians. The partnership will launch before year end 2021 and will enable Aeroplan members to earn points when shopping at LCBO stores across Ontario. 

Specifically, Aeroplan members will be able to:

• Earn 1 Aeroplan point for every $4 spent at LCBO;
• Earn bonus points when purchasing select LCBO products; 
• Redeem for LCBO gift cards at the  Aeroplan eStore starting at just 1,000 Aeroplan points for a $10 LCBO gift card.

I expect some great promotions coming from LCBO for this just remember that the earn rate is not that great at 1 point per $4. If you use your Cobalt card at the grocery store store to buy an LCBO gift card you will earn 5 Aeroplan miles per $1 spent. This should stack with the 1 point per $4 spent as well.

Virgin Australia (VA) will be officially added to Aeroplan’s growing roster of airline travel partners as of January 19th.

While the COVID-19 pandemic has created many challenges for travel, particularly in the form of border restrictions and route reductions, this new partnership positions Air Canada Aeroplan to be at the ready for the recovery. Trans-Pacific travel between Australia and Canada is an important market, with Air Canada having served three destinations pre-pandemic directly from Vancouver: Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane.

This new partnership enables Aeroplan members to look forward to the return to travel “down under,” with the added ability to earn and redeem Aeroplan points for travel to all of the prominent Australian and South Pacific destinations now accessible via Virgin Australia.     

For convenience, please find below the Aeroplan accrual chart for flights operated by Virgin Australia. Note that:

• Members can earn Aeroplan points based on distance flown on all scheduled flights operated by VA.
• For VA flights wholly within Australia, members can earn Status Qualifying Miles (SQM) and Status Qualifying Segments (SQS), as well as Status Qualifying Dollars (SQD) for VA domestic flights ticketed by Air Canada.

In terms of Aeroplan Flight Rewards on Virgin Australia flights, please note the following:

I have been a Simplii Financial user from before when PC Financial was around. Having a no-fee bank account was important to me and the free access to CIBC ATMs was a plus.

·         Flight Rewards – Flight rewards will be temporarily unavailable for new reservations, changes and cancellations from the evening of Nov. 6, through the afternoon of Nov. 8. ·         Non-Air Rewards – Members will be unable to redeem points for merchandise (including gift cards) and other travel rewards starting from the evening of Nov. 6, through the afternoon of Nov. 8.

·         Crediting points –  For points earned with partners between Oct. 30 and Nov. 9, there will be a delay in points crediting.  They will automatically be credited beginning Nov. 10.

·         Altitude members – As in previous years, Altitude status members must choose their Select Privileges no later than Oct. 31. All status benefits, including eUpgrades, will remain available throughout the transition period.

·         Star Alliance Upgrade Awards (SAUA) – Star Alliance Upgrade Awards will be paused for Aeroplan members starting Oct. 31. Members will be able to request these upgrades again later in 2021.

(We made the difficult choice to temporarily pause Star Alliance Upgrade Awards to allow for more focus on the implementation of new program features. This decision was reinforced by lower international travel demand as a result of COVID-19, and a related drop in demand for SAUA. We’re eager to reintroduce this product later in 2021. In the meantime, take note that Star Alliance Upgrade Awards will continue to be available on Air Canada flights for members of partner frequent flyer programs.)

·         Stay connected by downloading the latest Air Canada app, so they can immediately access the new Aeroplan features and benefits on the go from Nov. 8. Both aeroplan.com and the Aeroplan mobile app will be decommissioned as the new program launches.

Following on the heels of unveiling of the new Aeroplan program, Air Canada is introducing a new benefit for their Super Elite members. Firstly, it takes about a 10 km hike to the Echo lake located across the Squamish River. Then, if you’re an experienced mountaineer, you can rappel down and take a 42-feet drop to physically reach the pool. If you did it – congratulations, the reward is a priceless view and a peaceful moment.  

However, even if you do not get to touch this gem of a spot, it is still worth a hike and checking out the pool from above.  

5. Horne Lake Caves
