  • Aeroplan announces partnership with LCBO (Ontario)

Air Canada’s loyalty program Aeroplan announced a new multi-year strategic partnership with the LCBO that will provide market leading value to Ontarians. The partnership will launch before year end 2021 and will enable Aeroplan members to earn points when shopping at LCBO stores across Ontario.

Specifically, Aeroplan members will be able to:

    • Earn 1 Aeroplan point for every $4 spent at LCBO;
    • Earn bonus points when purchasing select LCBO products;
    • Redeem for LCBO gift cards at the  Aeroplan eStore starting at just 1,000 Aeroplan points for a $10 LCBO gift card.

I expect some great promotions coming from LCBO for this just remember that the earn rate is not that great at 1 point per $4. If you use your Cobalt card at the grocery store store to buy an LCBO gift card you will earn 5 Aeroplan miles per $1 spent. This should stack with the 1 point per $4 spent as well.

Here is a link to the promotion.

  • Aeroplan new airline partner for 2021 – Virgin Australia

Virgin Australia (VA) will be officially added to Aeroplan’s growing roster of airline travel partners as of January 19th.

While the COVID-19 pandemic has created many challenges for travel, particularly in the form of border restrictions and route reductions, this new partnership positions Air Canada Aeroplan to be at the ready for the recovery. Trans-Pacific travel between Australia and Canada is an important market, with Air Canada having served three destinations pre-pandemic directly from Vancouver: Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane.

This new partnership enables Aeroplan members to look forward to the return to travel “down under,” with the added ability to earn and redeem Aeroplan points for travel to all of the prominent Australian and South Pacific destinations now accessible via Virgin Australia.

    Virgin Australia

For convenience, please find below the Aeroplan accrual chart for flights operated by Virgin Australia. Note that:

    • Members can earn Aeroplan points based on distance flown on all scheduled flights operated by VA.
    • For VA flights wholly within Australia, members can earn Status Qualifying Miles (SQM) and Status Qualifying Segments (SQS), as well as Status Qualifying Dollars (SQD) for VA domestic flights ticketed by Air Canada.

In terms of Aeroplan Flight Rewards on Virgin Australia flights, please note the following:

    • VA flights will be priced based on Aeroplan’s pricing for partner airlines.
    • Members will be able to book VA flights online at aircanada.com, as well as via our Contact Centre.
    • VA flights can be combined with flights operated by Air Canada and our other international airline partners.
    • The partner booking fee will apply for flight rewards which include travel on VA.
  • Simplii Promo – Earn $250 bonus – New Account Promotion

I have been a Simplii Financial user from before when PC Financial was around. Having a no-fee bank account was important to me and the free access to CIBC ATMs was a plus.

What has kept me as a customer with the choices available is the nice app for my phone and free e-transfers. I have been a happy customer and wanted to announce their new referral program.

When you use my referral link to open a new Simplii Financial account and add an eligible direct deposit of at least $100 a month for 3 straight months (payroll, pension or employment insurance should do the trick) and when you deposit $100+ within 6 months after account opening and keep $100+ in the account for at least 60 days, you can earn a $250 bonus.

In the past I have asked my payroll to split my payroll into percentages where I can distribute the payment across multiple accounts.

This is a nice bonus on top of a good bank from my experiences.

You will get your $50 cash bonus 15 business days after you meet the conditions of the Refer a Friend offer, and your $200 cash bonus 6 months after you meet the conditions of the No Fee Chequing Account offer.

  • Aeroplan change over period – Unavailable – Nov 6 – 8, 2020

With the launch of the transformed Aeroplan coming up on Nov. 8, Aeroplan will be introducing many new and exciting program features. In order to prepare for this, some existing program features and services will be briefly unavailable during the changeover period.

Generally speaking, between the evening of Nov. 6, 2020, and the afternoon of Nov. 8, 2020, Aeroplan will be temporarily unavailable. However, some features will be put on hold ahead of Nov. 6, to make the transition more seamless.

Detailed information can be found at aircanada.com/aeroplanupdate, but here are some notable highlights:

    ·         Flight Rewards – Flight rewards will be temporarily unavailable for new reservations, changes and cancellations from the evening of Nov. 6, through the afternoon of Nov. 8. If a member is traveling during that time and needs immediate support for a previously booked flight reward reservation, they can contact the Aeroplan Contact Centre at 1-800-361-5373.

    ·         Non-Air Rewards – Members will be unable to redeem points for merchandise (including gift cards) and other travel rewards starting from the evening of Nov. 6, through the afternoon of Nov. 8.

    ·         Crediting points –  For points earned with partners between Oct. 30 and Nov. 9, there will be a delay in points crediting.  They will automatically be credited beginning Nov. 10.

    ·         Altitude members – As in previous years, Altitude status members must choose their Select Privileges no later than Oct. 31. All status benefits, including eUpgrades, will remain available throughout the transition period.

    ·         Star Alliance Upgrade Awards (SAUA) – Star Alliance Upgrade Awards will be paused for Aeroplan members starting Oct. 31. Members will be able to request these upgrades again later in 2021.

(We made the difficult choice to temporarily pause Star Alliance Upgrade Awards to allow for more focus on the implementation of new program features. This decision was reinforced by lower international travel demand as a result of COVID-19, and a related drop in demand for SAUA. We’re eager to reintroduce this product later in 2021. In the meantime, take note that Star Alliance Upgrade Awards will continue to be available on Air Canada flights for members of partner frequent flyer programs.)

In order to get ready, Aeroplan encourages their members to take the following actions:

    ·         Stay connected by downloading the latest Air Canada app, so they can immediately access the new Aeroplan features and benefits on the go from Nov. 8. Both aeroplan.com and the Aeroplan mobile app will be decommissioned as the new program launches.

    ·         Ensure their profile is up to date by logging in to their account and making sure all of their information is up to date.

  • New benefit for Super Elite members – Aeroplan – Complimentary In-Flight Refreshment

Following on the heels of unveiling of the new Aeroplan program, Air Canada is introducing a new benefit for their Super Elite members. While they are not currently offering Air Canada Bistro service onboard their flights, as soon as it returns, they will offer a complimentary inflight refreshment to Super Elite members traveling in Economy Class.

Below are the details of how they’re describing the benefit to their members:

    Complimentary In-Flight Refreshment

Beginning when we reintroduce Air Canada Bistro service onboard, and subject to the product selection available on your flight, Aeroplan Super Elite members can enjoy one free alcoholic beverage and one free snack item when traveling on Air Canada, Air Canada Express or Air Canada Rouge in Economy Class. Note that alcoholic beverages up to a value of $6.95 are eligible, while meal and fresh snack options (such as sandwiches and salads) are not eligible.

This will be communicated today as part of an e-mail being deployed to our status members, reinforcing the new Aeroplan Elite status benefits announced back on August 11, such as Priority Rewards and Status Pass.

  • 6 breathtaking under-the-radar places to visit in British Columbia

Canada’s westernmost province of British Columbia is famous for its vast landscapes, wild nature, and endless possibilities for adventure and escape.

It has something for everyone – endless outdoors with lush, untamed forests, blue ocean, lakes, cities, and small towns full of history, culture, and gastronomy.

While there are plenty of must-see spots in the province, such as Whistler, Vancouver, Victoria or Glaciar National parks, its smaller and less discovered places are what seals the deal of falling in love.

    Mount Robson
    Mount Robson

Here are 10 breathtaking under-the-radar places to visit in BC, Canada where you’ll escape the usual tourist crowds.

    1. Haida Gwaii archipelago

Haida Gwaii is a fascinating remote archipelago of 150 rocky islands, often called “Edge of the world.” It may be on some travelers’ “must-see list”, but because of its quite complicated access (it’s an 8-hour ferry ride!), Haida Gwaii doesn’t actually see that many visitors.

And how great is that for those who do get to experience this beautiful territory!

If you’re lucky to visit, be ready to be wowed by literally everything around you. The island’s breathtaking landscapes, abundant wildlife (like wild deer and eagles), lush forests, and rugged sprawling beaches are things to witness with awe. History lovers will also discover the historic First Nation settlements, authentic totem poles, and other archeological sites.

According to gohaidagwaii.ca, there are no chain stores, fast-food franchises, or large hotels on the islands, making it even more attractive to those looking to escape and immerse in this magical world.

And if you’re a hiking, biking, kayaking, boating, fishing enthusiast, you will find a paradise.

    1. The Enchanted Forest

If you’re traveling with little ones, you will not want to miss this magical place located midway between Revelstoke and Sicamous in the beautiful old-growth forests of Monashee Mountains.

You will not only admire such trees as cedar, fir, white spruce, or cottonwood on your route through the forest but also step into a magical fairytale world! The trail is set up with over 350 handcrafted fairytale characters such as Snow White or Goldy Locks figurines, BC’s tallest treehouse, Candy Cane House, and the castle.

To be honest, it’s worth a stop for anyone to nurture that inner child!

    1. Nelson

Even the most hard-core nature trip needs at least one or two days in civilization! And it doesn’t have to be a big city.

Nelson’s small town is just a perfect spot for those looking for a rest stop and a meal that’s not been cooked on a fireplace!

Located in the Selkirk Mountains and by the Kootenay Lake in BC’s southern interior, Nelson is a picturesque mountain settlement of around 10.000 residents.

Nelson’s beauty lies in the perfect combo of outdoor activities, nature and culture, and cuisine.

Start your day paddle boarding on Kootenay Lake, explore the area on a mountain bike, or ski in winter. Then, in the afternoon, enjoy shopping on Baker street, which is filled with shops and galleries. End the day in one of the many trendy local restaurants (Nelson has more restaurants per capita than Manhattan!).

    1. Natural Infinity Pool

What can be better than an infinity pool? A natural infinity pool, of course!

But since most things in life aren’t free, you’ll need to work to get to this incredible location.

Firstly, it takes about a 10 km hike to the Echo lake located across the Squamish River. Then, if you’re an experienced mountaineer, you can rappel down and take a 42-feet drop to physically reach the pool. If you did it – congratulations, the reward is a priceless view and a peaceful moment.

However, even if you do not get to touch this gem of a spot, it is still worth a hike and checking out the pool from above.

    1. Horne Lake Caves

The unknown is always thrilling, exciting, and a little scary. Those looking to experience all that and more can’t go wrong with the exploration of the Horne Lake Caves. It definitely is a perfect road trip activity.

Get ready to go deep, and dark – the caves are undeveloped, don’t have lighting, and rocky under your feet. Proper clothing and safety precautions are essential!

If you feel comfortable and have the experience, you can cautiously explore the caves on your own. Everyone else is highly recommended a tour of these caves and their steep slopes, slippery slopes, and exposed drops.

You are invited to discover your animalistic instincts and challenge yourself. And according to hornelake.com, “When you explore the fascinating realm beyond the surface, you also explore the deepest reaches of yourself.”

    1. Cariboo horseback riding

Many people have dreamed of being a cowboy at least for a day. And if not, merely feeling the freedom of riding through the wilderness is enough to fall in love horses!

Whether you are a complete equestrian beginner or someone who takes a peek at the Kentucky Derby odds every day (click here to know more), a horse adventure is a must when in British Columbia. For the best rides and most beautiful landscape, there’s no place better than Cariboo region.

Take a ride on the beautiful trails, mountain range, canyons and meadows, bond with this magnificent animal and explore the Cowboy Country.
