  • 3 Tips For Your Vegas Holiday

First and foremost, let’s make one thing clear: you don’t need to travel to gamble. According to Gambling Insider, Canada has more than 75 land-based gambling resorts, and if you don’t feel like driving for hours to play a few spins on a slot machine, you can always go online and play at one of the many regulated gambling outlets listed on the same website.

    Vegas night

There are times, in turn, when you feel adventurous (perhaps even a bit lucky) and you feel like merging travel, fun, and adventure by hopping on a plane and spending a weekend in Las Vegas, the casino capital of North America. Here are a few tips on how to make the most of it while keeping some cash in your pocket.

    Lodging

Las Vegas is home to more than 100 casinos, most of them part of resorts offering a variety of amenities, from spas, bars, and all-you-can-eat buffets to high-profile shows and, of course, a huge gambling floor with hundreds of slot machines and dozens of gaming tables. Aside from the fact that they are pretty costly and can eat through your travel budget faster than you think, they are a constant source of temptation – after all, who wouldn’t feel the urge to hop into the elevator and try their luck at one of the one-armed bandits that wait for them in the lobby? Instead of booking a hotel, check out some vacation rentals on Airbnb – they can be significantly cheaper and may even offer superior lodging. Not to mention the fact that many of them come with a kitchen so you won’t spend a fortune on dining out every evening.

    Gambling

While Las Vegas is a city filled with amazing sights, shows, restaurants, and landmarks, it is not called the “gambling capital” for nothing. Video lottery terminals, poker rooms, sports betting offices, and casinos are to be found on every corner (the Las Vegas Strip alone has 45 casinos), all of them with the promise of their own amazing offers, games, food, drinks, and fun. It’s pretty hard not to give in to your own curiosity when you are surrounded by so many tempting possibilities to win big. Gambling at a casino can be a very entertaining experience so if you feel like it’s for you, give it a try – but don’t make a habit out of it. If you go down to a casino, avoid alcohol – it can impair your judgment – and make sure to set a limit for your spending and stick to it.

    Eating

Casinos offer their patrons everything they need to keep them inside and playing: food, drinks, and entertainment. And this is great if you are on a tight-ish budget. Many casinos have affordable buffets, often with all-you-can-eat offers, and their prices will likely be far more affordable than room service (albeit they don’t beat cooking for yourself). Besides, you can also go online and check out the casinos’ websites not only for special offers and happy hours but for coupons, too – they usually come with requirements to complete, so be careful what you sign up for.

  • Making A Success Of A Singapore Jaunt

Singapore is a financial centre and transit hub for much of South Asia, but recent years have seen it transform into a tourism hotspot in its own right. According to figures reported in the Straits Times, 17.4 million visit every year, with over 80,000 of those being from Canadians who enjoy the air mile benefits of a long journey. As a melting pot of Asian cultures, modern excesses, and a huge amount of commonwealth history shared by Canada, Singapore may well be your next travel destination.

Here’s how to make your trip a success.

    Covering the basics

As with all trips, you need to cover your insurance and money before you head out to Singapore. When it comes to the level of care available, you’re in good hands – according to the Legatum Institute, Singapore has the second best healthcare in the world. With this level of care comes significant cost, however, so ensure that your policy has sufficient terms to properly protect your trip. Credit cards are widely accepted, but may attract high exchange fees. The Canadian and Singaporean dollar have been roughly equal in price for a while now, however, so you can enjoy similar levels of purchasing power. For those preferring not to use cash, digital banks like Monzo are widely accepted, as are pre-loaded travel cards. When it comes to saving cash, stay away from restaurants and hit the hawker markets – the food will likely be better quality, too.

    Travel arrangements and local customs

Canadians are fortunate, as there is a travel agreement in place with Singapore. As a result, the Government of Canada travel board advise no visa is necessary for trips up to 30 days. You will need to check with local immigration to extend your trip longer than the initial period.

Canadians enjoy a reputation as respectful and good travellers, but be aware of local customs. It pays to read up on the law, as Singapore have a number of restrictions on acts that are commonplace in Canada. One famous example concerns chewing gum, which remains banned for any purpose other than medical uses. Drunken and disorderly conduct is punished with little tolerance, and there is a risk of the cane. It’s also illegal to bring e-cigarettes into the country, according to the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office – don’t get caught out, and check all of the rules.

    Enjoying the cultures

Singapore is ethnically Chinese, Malay and Indian, with various other cultures also calling the island home. Up to 10 religions are present, according to Work Singapore, and the region has had a complex and long history involving Malaysia and the British Empire. As a result, there is a huge variety and depth of culture to be experienced. What’s more, as members of The Commonwealth, Canada and Singapore enjoy common links reaching back centuries. As a result, there are opportunities to learn about shared culture, such as at the Kranji War Memorial. Given the high level of water in and around the city, it might be worth taking a boat tour – you can reach many of the best cultural sights – like Marina Bay Sands and Gardens By The Bay – from a comfortable position.

Singapore is a wonderful tourism hotspot, and the flight alone will net you many air miles. However, with some unique laws in place and costly healthcare, it pays to be prepared. Make your preparations and enjoy what will be an excellent trip.

  • Marriott Ottawa Trip Report

Our stay on Canada Day at the Marriott Ottawa was one of our families favourite hotel stays all year.

I have never felt so welcome during a hotel stay, the hotel really catered to it’s guests for the special long weekend.

The hotel had many activities all weekend (dance party, bouncy castles, and even cotton candy and face painting for the kids).

The room was perfect for us, a nice king bed with pull-out sofa with a nice desk area to work on.

Luckily we had a high room so we had nice views and the hotel is conveniently located near Parliament hill, Sparks street at a walkable distance. We loved our stay here. We even found a nice playground (attached to a Tim Hortons and Beer Store) within a 20 minute walk with our kids that they loved.

As a Marriott Elite member the hotel provided many special activities for the weekend and the views from the revolving restaurant were amazing (my kids didn’t realize how lucky they were seeing the fireworks from the comfort of our room). They even created a candy bar for everyone!

One thing that stood out in this hotel was that they even had a convenient Kids Activity room (with games and toys). Even an arcade to play foosball, table top hockey and ride on trains/horses.

The room contained many any appropriate toys like blocks and a little play kitchen (great for rainy weather on Canada Day).

We would definitely recommend staying here for the convenience but also because this is a Category 5 Marriott meaning the redemption value for our 5-night stay was outstanding at only 80,000 Marriott points.

  • San Diego Natural History Museum Review (The Nat)

I had the pleasure to take my family to the San Diego Natural History Museum located in Balboa Park in November 2017.

One of the reasons we love visiting San Diego is that they have many family-friendly things to do.

We were able to take advantage of the CASC reciprocal admission agreement with the San Diego Natural History Museum to get in at no charge. I thought that the museum still offered a lot of value (included a 3D theatre with three films included in the cost of admission).

We were anticipating a stay of only 1 to 1 1/2 hours but we all had a great time.

It was interactive for pre-schoolers and toddlers and we enjoyed our 2 1/2 hour visit at the museum. Many exhibits were hands-on which made it perfect for toddlers.

My daughter enjoying some of the interactive displays (showing where the water comes from in California).

    My daughters touching the amethyst.

Showing my girls the plates of the earth and how the continents separated over time.

My girls admiring the big teeth of the sharks.

I particularly enjoyed the Foucault Pendulum that showed the rotation of the earth (their pendulum is huge – 2 stories tall).

  • Residence Inn Maui Wailea Trip Report

We had the pleasure of redeeming several Marriott reward points for a wonderful 7-night stay at the Residence Inn Maui Wailea.

We were upgraded to an ocean-view (we loved this view nightly).

This is one of the more expensive Residence Inns (in terms of points redeemed – Category 8) I have stayed at but was great with my family of 5. For larger families a studio (2 queens and a sofa bed) fit 6 people so it is a nice option to have in this expensive island.

It is not on the beach but within a 15-20 minute walk and there is a free shuttle available. (we usually walked to enjoy the morning). The hotel is less than 2 years old and it really shines compares to our previous stays in Kannapalli.

    Positives:

Lots of fun activities for kids after breakfast (Giant Lego Blocks and Jenga game). We enjoyed our relaxing time after breakfast letting the kids play.

Sport-court and putting green to play basketball at the end of the day.

Nice pool with lower level for younger kids (3 feet).

A host of lovely beaches, including Wailea, Ulua and Makena also are nearby. Nice balconies so you can enjoy breathtaking sunrises and sunsets. All of the rooms feature fully equipped kitchens and complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi for your convenience.

It was nice to have the standard free breakfast (typical American buffet style) with oatmeal, eggs, breads/muffins, yogurt, and cereals.

The hotel does not charge a resort fee (unlike many hotels in Maui) and has a free shuttle within 3 miles of the hotel. We opted to not even rent a car (as a family of 5 we would need a van – very cost prohibitive).

We just shopped for groceries at the Shops at Wailea (as using Instacart was just as expensive). We also ate at the Monkeypod (just around the corner) which was an awesome happy hour surprise for us.

I would recommend this hotel for a redemption in expensive Maui for larger families with the nice breakfast provided and cooking facilities (6 BBQs on-site).

  • Delta Hotels Vancouver Downtown Suites Trip Report

We had a great camping trip last month near Harrison Hot Springs, BC, in the mainland, but it was nice near the end to spend some time in the big city, Vancouver.

I love to visit Vancouver but the traffic is frustrating and it is very long (compared to my daily commute of 15 minutes by bicycle).

We had the pleasure to redeem 35,000 Marriott Reward Points for a one-night stay Delta Hotels Vancouver Downtown Suites located near Gastown. This was one of the last weekends before the kids go back to school so availability was low (I try to stay near Richmond as I find better value hotels for my points).

The hotel is ideally situated in Gastown, a short distance from the cruise port and other attractions like Rogers Centre.

We were upgraded to the top floor with a nice king size bed for my kids!

We were able to give the kids their own room and we enjoyed the extra space. The room came with a pull-out bed that was also very comfortable.

It conveniently also had a desk.

The bathroom featured a large walk-in shower that was comfortable and gave plenty of space.

We were offered free breakfast (we had to pay for our kids) in their kitchen and my wife and I each had some amazing egg bennys. My kids had a nice kids meal that they both finished!

It was a great stay and I would recommend staying here for a weekend getaway but I found the redemption rate to be very expensive. It was a convenient location and walkable to many places but I still think that most families would need a car to see some sights as public transit adds up in this big city.

  • Top 3 things to do whilst in Quebec City

Canada has long been a top choice for a holiday destination. The large country in North America is quite diverse in terms of its culture, landscape and points of interest. The city of Quebec is the only walled city found on the North American continent. It offers a wide range of cultural activities as well as attractions.

    quebec-815376_1920

When visiting Quebec City, here are some of the most popular activities to enjoy.

    Casino de Charlevoix

Consider having a night out at one of the casinos found in Quebec especially if you enjoy playing on online casino available from sites such as Gamblinginsider. With its close proximity to the St. Lawrence River and the Laurentian mountains, the casino is a popular point of interest. The casino offers players more than 20 gaming tables and 800 slot machines. Included in the casino is a hotel which offers a spa, health club, golf course and two all season outdoor pools. In fact, the Casino de Charlevoix was the first casino in the city to also offer accommodations.

    Tour the Wall of Quebec

Quebec City is enclosed within 4.6 kilometers of walls and gates. Consider taking a tour of these fortifications which includes the Citadel, a star shaped fort to protect the city. Tours are offered year round and the changing of the guard ceremony is a popular sight during the summer months. A new museum has also opened here, the Hall of Medals.

Quartier Petit Champlain & Place Royale

It was here in 1608, that explorer Samuel de Champlain founded his first settlement in Quebec City. Considered the cradle of French civilization in the Americas, a museum can be toured here. The oldest stone church in North America is another point of interest here. Built in 1688, the Notre-Dame-des-Victoires Church remains a popular tourist destination and continues to be an active house or worship. In recent years, the church has underdone restoration efforts to restore its original French architectural design.

When taking a holiday to Quebec City, consider these as possible activities to enjoy while in the old walled city.

  • W Seattle Hotel Review and Trip Report – Strange Mini Bar Item!

We love using our Avios to go from Victoria, BC to Seattle, WA for a nice long weekend – very walkable and always lots to do with kids.

We decided to splurge with some of our SPG points to redeem for a one night’s stay (10,000 points) at the W Seattle. It was a great location (close to Fairmont and 2 blocks from the light rail to get back to the airport and close enough downtown.

W Seattle Hotel - Slick bathroom with robe.

Some rooms come with city views and they all have flat-screen TVs, iPod docks.

The lobby is quite hip with a sushi bar, and a 3-story stainless steel fireplace topped with a DJ booth.

The W Seattle features Bliss toiletries which were really high quality (lemon and sage).

W Seattle Hotel - Comfy Starwood bed.
W Seattle Hotel – Comfy Starwood bed.

We all found minimal street and hallway noise.  The W Seattle was a peaceful stay but I thought overall that it was a good value for the points since I could pay about $150 on Priceline for a 4 star hotel to get something like the Pan Pacific or Marriott or the Hyatt Olive 8. Seattle is expensive for hotels (like most places on the west coast) so we enjoy any savings we can get.

It’s not a place for families with young kids, or at least I would not recommend it.  I found the halls very dark and didn’t have many little ones although they asked us if we wanted a crib (we never get one). If you have dogs, they will be able to accompany you with the hotel being pet friendly (which I don’t really care for).

They had fresh coffee and tea and water in the lounge all day (maybe because the film festival was happening).

One of the strange mini bar items was a pack of condoms!

This location is no more than a twenty minute walk to most attractions to explore in downtown Seattle.

  • American Express CENTURION Lounge San Francisco (SFO) Trip Report

I am a big American Express fan and as a holder of the Gold Rewards Card, Platinum Card, and Platinum AIR MILES card I expect some good perks when travelling.

On our latest trip overseas, we had a long layover at SFO, San Francisco, which is a great airport in the US (even has a yoga studio). Whomever complains about long layovers cry me a river (2 kids, 11 hours on route to Auckland).

    Kids and Parents Room

Area where kids can have fun and watch a movie or read or play! They had books even video games for older kids. It was a quiet place to relax and let the kids burn off energy. I kind of wish they had more books though – lots of comfy pillows.

We were there for 3 hours then left for a stroller nap and then returned to relax.

We enjoyed the fresh food and were able to relax before our 15 hour flight to Sydney.

I hope they add on of these lounges to Toronto or Vancouver!

Yet another great benefit of the American Express Platinum card.
