  • The Glacier Skywalk – Jasper Alberta

Jasper National Park is already a tourist haven by itself, especially for those who are nature lovers.

    A one-of-a-kind tourist attraction

However, there’s a new addition intended to further increase its allure: the newly opened Glacier Skywalk.

    Glacier Sky-Walk

This attraction allows visitors to walk on a glass observation deck so they can marvel at the vast Sunwapta Valley from a height of 918 feet. Opened to the public just recently this past May, the skywalk aims to be Canada’s newest iconic attraction. It’s also a platform to learn more about Columbia Icefield’s glaciology, ecology, and natural history.

    Glacial Discovery Walk.

    Source: (http://savecfbrockcliffe.blogspot.ca/)

The Glacier Skywalk has a vision of providing tourists and locals with an interpretive experience since it’s designed to integrate with the wilderness; there will be guaranteed sightings of waterfalls, as well as animals like mountain goats and bighorn sheep, apart from the view of the vast glacial valley.

However grandly promoted the project is, it wasn’t free from controversy while still under construction. There were environmentalists who were heavily opposed to the project, according to CBC News. This opposition was based on a perceived dangerous effect of the project on certain wildlife.

It was feared that this development would be intrusive on the natural habitat of the animals, and might also create a disturbance to them. This concern, though, was noted by the developers, prompting Park Canada to conduct environmental studies and adopt construction measures for the protection of the animals. Even though the project was initially strongly opposed, its developers were – and still are – positive that it will add value to the whole tourism experience in Jasper National Park.

It is, after all, a rather unusual attraction; one which should be experienced by locals and visitors alike. Sadly, the current state of Canada’s inbound tourism isn’t exactly looking up. Canadian news service The Globe and Mail reports that the already low numbers posited by the country’s inbound foreign travel was further diminished at the first quarter of this year by 2.4%.

Canada’s airports could probably take a page from other major international airports which have undergone important overhauls in the hopes of accommodating more passengers. BBC News says that Glasgow Airport’s 6.9% increase in international passenger volume was largely due to the airport’s more popular airlines opening up more routes. In the UK, airport parking service site parking 4 less documented that Luton Airport is in the midst of a near-complete makeover, including roadway expansions and terminal modernizations. As for Malaysia, they went ahead and built a whole new airport expansion altogether. Dubbed the KLIA2, it caters exclusively to budget airlines; a definite flyer drawer.

This is in direct contrast to the relatively strong surge of international tourism the world has got going right now, spearheaded by China’s newly-formed and travel-hungry upper-middle class.

With sufficient airport infrastructure upgrades coupled with a really effective tourism campaign, perhaps many more people around the world will get to experience the Glacier Skywalk yet.

  • Sequim Lavender Festival

Readers of the blog will know that I am based in Victoria, BC (one of the best places to live in Canada), we are a ferry ride away from the mainland US.

One of my favourite and unique places to see is Sequim in Washington State. They are known for producing a lot of lavender.

    Lavender in Sequim
    Lavender in Sequim

We attended to Sequim Lavendar Festival in 2012 and it was a family friendly event.

My wife and I and our first daughter enjoyed the weekend in Sequim, Washington. This city is located in the “Olympic Rain Shadow“. Sequim sits on the northeast side of the Olympic Mountains, so they are almost always in this dry slot – although the shadow affects Port Townsend and the San Juan Islands as well. Sequim only gets about 18 inches of rain a year.

The festival is a celebration of lavender. The festival features a street fair, food and drink vendors, and live music and performers. You will find lavender products of every kind at the street fair, from oils and lotions to lavender lemonade to sachets and wands.

    Live Music.

For the kids there were pony rides, rides on tractors and face painting.

We liked that it was a free event and had several buses setup to transport people from one farm to the next. It was a free festival and shuttles were available from Port Angeles (we came on the Black Ball ferry).

Our favorite part was touring the farms. They let you browse the fields and smell the flowers and you can learn how the growers cultivate and use their lavender.

The farms on these tours provide different amenities and entertainment, including gift shops, food and crafts booths, live music, and U-pick lavender blooms.

  • Trip Report – Hilton Hawaiian Village

This Hilton Resort is been named a Hawaiian village for good reason.

This property is at the opposite end of Diamond Head in the heart of Waikiki Beach. This hotel resort is HUGE – has over 22 acres of property to cover (it even has two Starbucks on the property). It has over 20 restaurants and bars and on Friday evenings has a free fireworks show (great value and time at 7:30 for the kids).

View from our room in the Lagoon tower
View from our room in the Lagoon tower

At check-in because of my Hilton Gold status, I was upgraded to the Rainbow tower in a suite with a high floor with a view of the lagoon.

Our daughter enjoyed seeing the penguins and the turtles and the koi fish around the hotel.

Some problems I saw saw that the Super pool was freezing! Another problem is that since the children’s pool is connected – as soon as an accident happens – the pool is shut down. Good thing they have another huge pool at the Tapa tower.

Hanging out at the Hilton Hawaiian Village

The daily activities are too early for people on holidays – who wants to wake up at 6 am to take a yoga class – couldn’t they have it at 7 AM or 7:30 AM?

This was an accidental visit for us. It was a prepaid vacation that was offered months in advance (for a an unbelievable price) after searching for accommodation for our last holiday in New Orleans. As we arranged our stay in New Orleans it was offered as a Vacation Ownership promotion. To make a long story short we ended up purchasing a Hawaiian vacation that was never planned only because it was such a great offer. I’m glad we did too!

Breakfast time at the Hilton Hawaiian Village worked out well with a great breakfast of nice juices and coffee, tea, muffins, fresh fruit, and cereals (just what I enjoy).

Relaxing area in the Breakfast lounge.

Here are some photos of our suite. Our daughter had lots of room to run around.

No crib was needed but she enjoyed being able to run around.
The room had a sectional to relax and enjoy a nice snooze in the afternoon.
Busy checking out the complimentary PS3 in the room.

Hilton really knows how to provide top of the line service to their members.  I am never disappointed with my stays at any of the Hilton Properties. Our room was LARGE, two balcony’s overlooking Duke Kahanamoku Lagoon, sofa and a lounging area where we ate lunches, bar fridge, spa bath with separate shower and an area to unpack move in for the week.
Travelling with a toddler can be a challenge in confined hotel rooms but here there was no issue.

Sand castles at the expansive Waikiki beach.
Sand castles at the expansive Waikiki beach.

The Hilton Hawaiian Village also provided us with a coupon booklet to eat at the village’s restaurants. Some were small discounts like a free appetizer while some were 15% off at the steakhouses. We made the most of the coupon booklet and remained on the property for most of our stay. It has everything you need so you don’t really need to venture far if you just want to relax.
My highlight of the Village was the Friday night firework show that started a 7 pm – perfect timing with a toddler.

Enjoying seeing the penguins every morning.
Enjoying seeing the penguins every morning (with Elmo).

I also enjoyed the Luau from our balcony 3 nights in a row. Watching the fireshow and the Hula dancers in the privacy of our hotel room was a real treat as well as a money saver. The first night we ordered pizza and hung out on the balcony watching the show.

    Tapa Bar pool.

The wildlife in the village was a nice treat for my daughter although she always watched from afar never getting too close. The expansive tropical gardens are impressive.

With all those pools only one was heated, the other 4 were like ice baths. Not many people hung out in those pools only around them. It made the heated pool with slides packed with parents and young kids running around until one kid decide to go pooh in the pool. Then the fun was over and he pool was closed.

We made our way to the Tapa pool which wasn’t heated but had a large shallow area that made the water warm and toddlers friendly. I actually enjoyed that particular area better.

This was another successful Hawaiian Vacation on the shores of Waikiki Beach.

  • Trip Report – The World’s Longest Beach – Long Beach Washington

Is Long Beach, Washington really the longest beach in the world? Located on the beautiful Peninsula of Washington State, Long Beach runs 25 miles long and 2 miles wide. It certainly isn’t the longest beach in the world that I’ve been to but it sure is long enough to be called Long Beach!

    Long Beach, Washington State

We were coming from Victoria, BC along the 101 south down the scenic route. Any scenic route is always longer and winder but traffic was light since it was the August long weekend in Canada we were heading the opposite direction.  It doesn’t matter what time of year or time of day the ferry crossing on the Coho which sails from Victoria Inner Harbour to Port Angeles is always full. I recommend reserving a spot which ever way you are heading unless you want to wait around for 2 sailing if you can even get across on the same day.

    Long Beach ENtrance
    Long Beach Entrance

The crossing is generally a little choppy and can be hard with a family since family seating is limited. The Coho is a private run company and as with any private run company trying to make a few bucks it’s over crowed with expensive tasteless food so bring your own food unless you want to be feeding the kids greasy fries. They pack the cars in like sardines and the border crossing in Port Angeles is long and not well organized however it is the only crossing so be prepared to put up with long waits and lots of people.

    Pan Handle?
    Pan Handle?

The drive down is extremely scenic with many places to stop in for a picnic lunch or catch a beautiful sunset. I’ve driven this road twice now and by far the best time is after dinner when the traffic is low and the roads are clear. Driving along the coast in the dark can be hard on the eyes and tired-some.

The long drive out is worth it once we arrived in Long Beach Washington. The beautiful beach side town if filled with family friendly activities and attractions. With family friendly restaurants, cafes, bakeries and plenty of sweet shops.

    Mrs Canadian Travel Hacking posing!
    Mrs Canadian Travel Hacking posing!

Activities range from digging for clams,  bicycle build for two along the beach walk way, to amusements such as carousel an carnival rides you find at a fair. With bumper cars to arcades kids of all ages will enjoy.

Our favourite part of Long Beach by far is the fresh tuna that can be purchased for $7lb and the beach walk that extends for miles int the sand dunes and beach.

The price for accommodation is reasonable and beach houses can be rented out by the night, or week. The beach house is obviously more family friendly as this gives you the opportunity to BBQ your own fresh fish and enjoy the afternoon on the deck. But if you don’t want to rent a house you can always BBQ on the beach. Long Beach offers family friendly picnic areas with BBQ and tables. In fact you can even bring your own BBQ and drive your car down to the waters edge for a picnic.

    Romantic photo at the beach.
    Romantic photo at the beach.

The best time of the year to visit is late July and to mid August. Long beach is right on the coast with no land cover so the temperatures can range from extremely warm to mild and breezy along the beach. We have been fortunate to have outstanding weather during our visits  but we always pack a jacket and warm pj. The homes can be cool at night and in the evening!

If you are looking for a more budget way to enjoy Long Beach you might want to check out local websites or craiglist.com that offer housing swaps. We always manage to find a family that wants to swap their beach house for our condo in Victoria, BC. This makes a very affordable summer break.

    Showcasing the sea.

One of the many events offered in Long Beach is the Kite festival that happens every year in mid August which Long Beach is well known for. The Kite festival is a must for any family!

Long Beach also offers plenty of farmers markets, whale watching and art festivals. As you can see the attractions, activities and events are endless.

  • Hornblower Cruises – Harbor Cruises – San Diego

Taking a Hornblower Cruise is the perfect way to see San Diego. We went on Memorial Day and had a fabulous time.

    9085769784_cb036c64d6_k

We were joined by many other tourists and families looking for a better view of the San Diego Bay (they have a North and South bay tour and we just stayed for the North tour – easier with our baby).

    9085780806_0040ac2e09-500x200

We enjoyed a professionally narrated tour of many landmarks from the sea. 9083550061_7047515df7_h-500x200We covered over 13 miles on the Big Bay, passing by Seaport Village, Shelter Island, ship-building and dry-docking facilities, Coronado Island, Point Loma, and Cabrillo National Monument, among many others.9085779616_34cb3dfc03_z-500x2009083548705_e84df43d33-300x200

The narrators point out marine animals and birds.

We found many opportunities to take photos and see a new perspective of this big city.

    9083547389_380798b0c8-e1372015455646

I recommend getting a seat at the top of the boat but everywhere on the boat has a nice view.

The washrooms are on the bottom floor and can be quiet tight but just leave your stroller in the front room.

  • Fort Lauderdale Water Taxi Review

We started by parking our rental car at the Galleria Mall (one of 10 stops on the water taxi – hop on and hop off tour).\

    DSC_3097 DSC_3096 DSC_3095 DSC_3094 DSC_3093 DSC_3092 DSC_3091 DSC_3090 DSC_3089 DSC_3088 DSC_3087 DSC_3086 DSC_3085 DSC_3084 DSC_3083 DSC_3082 DSC_3081 DSC_3080 DSC_3079 DSC_3078 DSC_3077 DSC_3076 DSC_3075 DSC_3074 DSC_3073 DSC_3072 DSC_3071 DSC_3070 DSC_3069 DSC_3068 DSC_3067 DSC_3066 DSC_3065 DSC_3064 DSC_3063

We saw mega wealthy houses, heard interesting stories about the houses, heard some jokes, and were entertained with a comfortable ride. I enjoyed seeing the back stories about the mansions and how much the houses are for sale. We saw how Wayne Huizinga (previous owner of BlockBuster Video) bought his neighbour’s homes when they complained when he took his helicopter to his office. It was impressive to see the canals and various homes and opulence.

The Water Taxi routes run between Oakland Park Boulevard and Southeast 17th Street along the Intracoastal waterway, and west along the New River into downtown Fort Lauderdale as far as the Las Olas Riverfront complex.

We ended up at the Las Olas Riverfront complex after about a 45 minute water taxi ride and stopped for a lunch break and baby break. We did a small walk and checked out some interesting art and shops on Las Olas.

We took the 1:55 PM water taxi back to the Galleria stop.

Make sure that you save your ticket because the Fort Lauderdale Water Taxi provides a variety of Cruise & Save partners providing small discounts with display of ticket.

The Water Taxi ticket lets you on and off its stops all day while taking in the sights along Fort Lauderdale’s world famous waterways, which have earned the city the nickname, “The Venice of America”.

I recommend this to all visitors to Fort Lauderdale and the staff is really nice and friendly. Our daughter was getting restless (too long a trip for her), but the captain recommended a stop at Hollywood beach and the stops are well planned with restaurants nearby.

Make sure you check the schedule prior to planning your day though.

  • Parksville Canadian Open Sand Sculpting 2013 Highlights

We are big fans of Parksville, BC in the summer. Very family friendly and incredible resources for the whole family.

We had a chance last weekend to attend the Quality Foods Canadian Open Sand Sculpting.

The gated exhibition opened on July 13th and will remain open until Sunday, August 18th, from 9am to 9pm daily. Voting for the ever popular “People’s Choice Award” begins after judging has been completed. Judging takes place on Sunday from 3pm to 5 pm and the winners are announced Sunday at approximately 5:30 pm.

The community voted and the winning sculpting theme for 2013 is Fairy Tales.

All of the solo and double sculptors will have to create something to do with Fairy Tales.

  • Westin Ka’anapali Ocean Resort Villas Maui Trip Report

Before I had my poor experience at the Four Points by Sheraton Victoria Gateway I had an incredible experience at the Westin Ka’anapali Ocean Resort Villas in Maui. Usually, near the end of a holiday part of me is looking forward to getting back home but not this trip. We spent five nights at this resort and it was incredible (rooms usually go for above $400 to $500 a night).

Family photo in front of Westin Kaanapali Resort Maui

The resort had this fun pirates ship that I took my 15 month old daughter (at the time).

We went down that slide so many times and she loved hanging out with the other kids and the water.

Next to the pirate’s pool (shared by the north and south villa), was a nice little playground for the kids.

We stayed in a Ocean View Studio Villa room that was spacious for the three of us. It had a separate lounge and an enclosed bathroom that made the room feel very spacious.

Our room including a breakfast bar, full-sized kitchen appliances, flat-screen TV, DVD player, and a Bose® AM/FM Wave® radio. The tv was high-quality and had high-definition signals.

The resort was so clean and perfect. The  Ka’anapali beach was walking distance in front of us and we enjoyed the easy access (also had plenty of showers to clean off the sand before entering the resort).

The beach was close enough so that when we wanted to bring her inside for a nap it was really easy to.

What makes this particular resort stand out for us was the large pool (always lots of room) and the amenities like the big water wheel!

Another bonus for staying here are the large koi ponds

We had an incredible time and would love to return to this amazing resort (I could not find any issues with the resort except one major thing my wife noticed). Starwood is really eco-conscious and provides recycling containers in each room but we noticed the maid simply throwing everything into the garbage.

One of the benefits of staying at any of the Starwood properties in Ka’anapali is the use of the free shuttle.

Guests of The Westin Ka’anapali Ocean Resort Villas, The Westin Maui Resort and Spa and Sheraton Maui Resort now have access to a complimentary shuttle that will travel between Ka’anapali and three locations in Lahaina. All guests will be asked to show their room key prior to boarding the shuttle, whose stops include the Lahaina Cannery Mall, Lahaina Gateway Mall, and Hilo Hattie’s! You don’t really need a car once you get there because the car takes you into town to get groceries and you can pick up supplies.

  • Four Points by Sheraton Victoria Gateway Trip Report and Review

I recently had the chance to stay at the Four Points by Sheraton Victoria Gateway (located in the suburbs in Langford, BC).

Four Points by Sheraton Victoria Gateway is located well outside the core of Victoria off of the Trans Canada Highway, with shopping and recreation nearby.

According to the website, they claim it takes 10 minutes to downtown Victoria (even if you hit all traffic lights this is not possible from Langford, BC).

Using Google Maps, I get a distance of 14 km and a time estimate of 15 – 23 minutes.

Distance to Langford, BC from Victoria, BC
Distance to Langford, BC from Victoria, BC

The area (Langford) only has two hotels (both owner by Starwood). The other is a Westin that is more expensive (and charges a resort fee of $15 daily).

The hotel has 117 comfortable, contemporary guest rooms have nice features like a 42” flat screen TV and free High Speed Internet Access.

[styled_box title=”Disclosure Statement” color=”black”]I booked my hotel room using Expedia and am an SPG Preferred Plus member. [/styled_box]

We stayed in a connecting room with a nice king-sized bed (although we were booked into a room with two queen sized beds).

Our room did not have a bathtub (which was OK).

We had access to a coffee machine and teas (although the hotel has coffee and many more teas in the lobby). One part I didn’t like is the bottled water (since Starwood is all about cutting down on waste). I like the gesture but this doesn’t do anything for me (I refuse to buy bottled water because of the waste involved).

Four Points by Sheraton Victoria Gateway coffee and tea

We had a nice 42″ tv in our room but I was disappointed with the quality. At our last Westin stay we had a high definition signal for the channels and if a hotel tv doesn’t have that (where available) it shouldn’t bother with a fancy new tv!

The Four Points by Sheraton Victoria Gateway had a nice pool and hot tub (steam and sauna were also available). The pool area was starting to show wear and tear but it was a nice area to swim in (long hours available as well).

Four Points by Sheraton Victoria Gateway hot tub
Four Points by Sheraton Victoria Gateway hot tub

As part of my rate I was entitled to a free breakfast (which can make or break a property for me). We received a continental breakfast that consisted of:

    1. A coffee
    2. English muffin pre-buttered
    3. Fresh fruit ramekin
    4. Herbed yogurt dip (greek yogurt mixed with fresh mint) (tasted like a fancy dip for crackers)!

That was it! It was the most disappointing breakfast served at a Starwood property ever.

Sheraton should improve on this breakfast because this was unappetizing and inedible (we ended up eating elsewhere).

I suggest saving your money and dining elsewhere in Langford or Victoria (I am sure this pub must have decent food but do not go for breakfast)!

    Positives:

    • Free Internet
    • Nice sized room
    • Free parking
    • Pool
    • Nice outdoor space (lawn)

    Negatives:

    • Terrible breakfast
    • Hotel showing signs of wear and tear
    • Can hear other rooms and hall noise
  • Alaska Airlines Seattle Lounge Review – Disappointing

I am a big fan of airport lounges. You get to relax and enjoy the fast WIFI and snacks before your next flights.

On our trip back from Maui we had a stop in Seattle before flying to Victoria with Horizon Airlines for almost two hours.

[styled_box title=”Disclosure Statement” color=”blue”]My wife and I each paid $45 for a day pass to the Alaska Airlines lounge in Seattle.[/styled_box]

After we paid our $45 daily fee for the use of the lounge it was about 8:35 pm and we were hoping to enjoy a nice soup or some snacks.

My wife and I were both disappointed in the lack of snacks and no soup available (was already eaten).

The Alaska Airlines Seattle lounge has a wonderful workspace to do work and is a quiet zone.

    workspace-alaska-airlines-seattle

My overall impression is disappointing. The lounge had some nice features but the lack of snacks was a major problem for me.

Only one of the customer service agents went to get a yogurt for our daughter (couldn’t really give her croutons and nacho chips). The other agents I spoke with after alerting them about the lack of snacks could not seem bothered.

I expect a lot from a lounge when I am paying $45 for a day pass at that time of the evening. I understand the lack of food but contingency plans need to be in place to have extra sandwiches or wraps (not that hard to make).

I have Alaska MVP status at the moment and I have flown 64,699 actual miles as of today so I can reasonably expect a certain level of quality.

The wines (from Washington State and Oregon) were very nice and they had other spirits and beer available from a bartender.

After going to this lounge I am not sure I would spend the money to go to another Alaska Airlines lounge – I have heard they have a new one in LAX. The American Airlines lounges I have been to have had excellent snacks and better service.

Have you ever been to this lounge and what were your thoughts?
